Artists explode myth work is good for you
comments by David Bromfield on the environmental artwork Salary:
…”There is much more to see and ponder in Artworks. Perdita Phillips highlights the paradoxical nature of work in her piece Salary. She has covered the floor of a room with brilliant white rock salt. The word “salary” derives from the ancient practice of paying soldiers and others in salt rather than money. The piece reminds us that all work is really rewarded by power to purchase goods and services. This reward disguises a bleak salt desert of exploitation. Surely, we can do better.”
